5 Ways to build your confidence

SELF-CONFIDENCE

Nobody prepares you for what growing up will bring. It comes with ups and downs – weird bodily changes, mood swings, school, and working up the courage to ask out your crush, peer pressure and friends. The list could really go on, and on top of that you have to deal with gnarly pimples and breakouts and still try and be confident. Luckily, confidence comes from within.

We’ve put together five tips for you to own your moments and be a better version of you. Keep cool, calm and confident whenever and wherever.

  1. Change the way you think

Don’t focus on negativity. If you find yourself constantly thinking negatively, snapping out of it may be easier said than done. There are a few things you can try to shift your thinking. Like reading uplifting, feel-good books, listening to your favourite jams, or even dancing! Often what we focus on expands. What we think, we create. Negative thoughts will only create more negative thoughts. It’s important to break this cycle. Focus on what you want to create and what makes you happy. Sometimes it’s as simple as avoiding people who complain and walking away.

  1. Embrace positivity

Stop comparing yourself to others. You were born to be no one other than yourself. Your personal experiences will shape a unique, genuine you. You will have your own perspectives, talents and values which are exclusive to you and who you are. You are unique and you are on your own distinctive journey. If you want something to measure yourself by, compare today’s ‘you’ to yesterday’s ‘you’.

  1. Use positive affirmation

Wake up every morning and give yourself compliments. Tell yourself you love yourself. Say it out loud and often! Affirmations should always be in the present tense, they are not something you plan on doing in the future and should always speak to who you are right now. Repetition and frequency is just as important. Say it loud and proud!

  1. Try new things

This gives you the best opportunity to learn something new and to learn more about yourself. Breaking out of your comfort zone will challenge you, expand on your limitations and give you confidence. Test your limits and break your barriers. Take up a new hobby or sport, you might surprise yourself.

  1. Give out compliments

Often when we are stuck in a cycle of negative thoughts, we can project negativity on others, with gossiping and insults. Break the cycle of negativity by giving out compliments and praise. Instead of taking part in horrible gossip or backstabbing behaviour, remove yourself from the situation. Make an effort to compliment people and you will build confidence and become well-liked among others. Bringing out the best in others will bring out the best in you!

Start your journey of self-acceptance and build up your confidence. Learn and grow every day. Confidence starts from within and breaking the cycle of negative thoughts starts here. Go on, give it a try and tell us how it goes.
