As we bid a happy “goodbye” to an awesome primary school experience, moving up in the world from Grade 7 to Grade 8 is a huge achievement – well done! Follow these tips to make new friends.

Starting a new grade at a new school is not an easy task. No need to start freaking out and wondering if you are going to be able to cut it on the new social scene. It’s completely normal to feel weird and unsettled at a new place, and to miss your old friends.

Don’t worry, you are totally going to rock it, make new friends and make your new school your new home.

  • Say Hello

A simple ‘hello’ is definitely the first step to making new friends  Taking the first step to greet somebody is a means of putting yourself out there and it shows you are approachable.

In many instances, a person may not greet somebody first, solely because they are shy.

  • Ask Questions

Many people prefer to talk about themselves – possibly a universal truth! Why not play to that? We totally get that you may be a bit shy but asking people questions about themselves shows that you are interested.

Questions are a brilliant ice breaker especially if the other person likes talking. It also sets up a more than likely scenario of where they will ask a question in return which fuels the conversation.

  • Look Your Best

Confidence plays a major role in making new friends. It gives you the courage to attempt to forge new relationships.

It’s also well known that when you look your best you feel your best. Wear the clothes that make you feel good and also make the effort to be well groomed.

  • Don’t’ Force It

While it is fantastic that you take the initiative to make new pals, it is also important to know your boundaries.

There are few things worse than when a person comes on too strong – try to have a good handle on not overstepping your social boundaries. If you can sense that the other person has no intention to connect with you, respect their boundaries and don’t force it.

Joining a team of any sorts will allow you to interact and socialise with a brand new group of people – you’re guaranteed to make new friends, trust us!

The best advice we can give you is to smile and be yourself. Knowing that you are not the only one who’s feeling like this also helps, just remember that others are also going through the same thing as you – moving grades and trying to make new friends.
