Nelson Mandela day, which happens on the 18th July every year, was inspired by a call Nelson Mandela made for the next generation to take on the burden of leadership in addressing the world’s social injustices.

Cultivating an attitude of leadership

Today’s youth are the tomorrow’s leaders and if we can start cultivating an attitude of leadership now, we can benefit in the future, ensuring a better world for all humanity.

Let’s take a closer look at what leadership is and what qualities make a good leader.


Leadership is:

  • Helping others in need
  • Doing the right thing and standing up for what is right even in the face of adversity
  • Setting good examples
  • Guiding others on the right path
  • Doing the right thing even when no one is watching


Characteristics of a leader:

  • Honesty
  • Generosity
  • Being a good listener
  • Confidence
  • Fairness
  • Proactive
  • Good communicator
  • Self control


A role model

As South Africans, one of our biggest leadership role models to date is Nelson Mandela. A man who truly inspired a nation.

We can take inspiration from Nelson Mandela’s 11 leadership qualities.
